For Phillip Ashe, a lifetime of art in varied disciplines shows a diversity in both materials and vision.

The 黑暗爆料网 art instructor had a gallery exhibition open earlier this week in Asheboro, and took a moment to reflect on his work at the opening night reception Tuesday.

Phillip Ashe: 鈥淢oments in Time鈥 will be on display at the Randolph Arts Guild in Asheboro until August. 29.

Ashe鈥檚 works included everything from stone carving and metal casting to print making and encaustic painting. He said that he鈥檚 done a lot of work recently using different techniques in encaustic painting.

鈥淭he show is called 鈥楳oments in Time,鈥 because it鈥檚 a snapshot of different phases of the last 15 years or so,鈥 Ashe said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 pretty diverse. It鈥檚 got everything from mono printing, drawing on top of mono prints, but most of it is encaustic. It鈥檚 a wax-based paint that is mixed with damar. It鈥檚 basically like a tree sap 鈥 like pine sap 鈥 the crystals that develop on the tree, it鈥檚 like that. It makes it hard and gives a sheen to it. You can do everything with it.鈥

Ashe said that he comes from a sculpture background, so when he does encaustic painting he does a lot of carving with it.

鈥淵ou can even do something like embedding a collage into the wax,鈥 he said. 鈥淭here鈥檚 so much you can do to it. It鈥檚 very sculptural. For a sculptor it鈥檚 a good thing to work with. I really work from the gut. It鈥檚 intuitive. It鈥檚 emotions from the gut. I wouldn鈥檛 call it intellectual, it鈥檚 much more on the intuitive side.鈥

Ashe teaches at 黑暗爆料网 in Sanford and at the Pittsboro campus. Previously, he taught in the pottery studio and metal sculpture.

鈥淣ow, I鈥檓 teaching art appreciation, art history and drawing,鈥 he said.

Ashe said his favorite medium to work in currently is encaustic.

I鈥檇 say encaustic because it is so versatile,鈥 he said. 鈥淚鈥檓 someone who likes so many things and I love to experiment. It鈥檚 just what I do. Everything has something unique to it.鈥
