RISE program holds graduation for the spring 2025 class

SANFORD, N.C. -- The 黑暗爆料网 Small Business Center proudly presented certificates to participants of the spring 2025 RISE (Real Investment in Sanford Entrepreneurs) program. This cohort, composed of dedicated entrepreneurs, underwent an intensive eight-class series aimed at nurturing and refining their business ideas. The graduation ceremony took place earlier this spring at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic & Conference Center at 黑暗爆料网.

The RISE program, a collaborative effort of the 黑暗爆料网 Small Business Center, Sanford Area Growth Alliance 鈥 Chamber of Commerce, and Downtown Sanford, Inc., offers participants the tools and support needed to turn their entrepreneurial dreams into reality. Graduates who open retail businesses in downtown Sanford are eligible to apply for start-up grants.

As part of the celebration, two exceptional entrepreneurs were awarded grants to launch their businesses -- Janet Stoudemire, founder of The BLU Resource Center, a drop-in childcare facility offering before- and after-school care; and Mackenzie Greene, founder of PlayEscape, an indoor family entertainment center. Both recipients were recognized for their innovative business models and outstanding commitment throughout the program.

Reflecting on her journey, Stoudemire shared, 鈥淭he RISE program was an eye-opening experience that provided me with valuable business insights and networking opportunities. 鈥 The program not only highlighted areas where I could improve, but also gave me the tools to be more strategic in my business.鈥

Greene echoed the impact of the program: 鈥淧articipating in the 2025 RISE program has been incredibly rewarding. From connecting with inspiring entrepreneurs to learning from seasoned experts, I鈥檝e gained insights that will shape my approach as a business owner. Being surrounded by passionate, like-minded individuals has been both motivating and empowering. Receiving the Women-Owned Business Grant is a pivotal moment, and I鈥檓 excited to bring PlayEscape to life for our community.鈥

Kelli Laudate, Executive Director of Downtown Sanford, Inc., emphasized the city鈥檚 commitment to small business growth. 鈥淒owntown Sanford, Inc. is dedicated to fostering entrepreneurial development while celebrating our historic charm. As part of this cohort, we are proud to award two grants 鈥 one from the City of Sanford and another through the Business and Professional Women civic organization. This initiative reflects our mission to drive economic growth through education, promotion, and community-focused development. There鈥檚 no doubt 鈥 Sanford is open for business, and programs like RISE help entrepreneurs build thriving ventures,鈥 said Laudate.

Susan Gomez, Director of the Sanford Area Growth Alliance (SAGA) - Chamber of Commerce, praised the program鈥檚 impact on local economic diversity: 鈥淪AGA is proud to support RISE as part of our mission to expand and diversify Lee County鈥檚 economy. Through collaboration with the Small Business Center and Downtown Sanford, Inc., we are addressing community needs, strengthening our local workforce, and nurturing small business success. With the completion of the RISE program鈥檚 ninth cohort, we鈥檙e proud to award grants to two entrepreneurs who will contribute to Sanford鈥檚 continued growth. To date, RISE has launched 21 businesses and created over 50 jobs. We look forward to seeing Janet and Mackenzie carry that momentum forward.鈥

Terri Brown, Executive Director of the 黑暗爆料网 Small Business Center and RISE program facilitator, highlighted the value of entrepreneurial training: 鈥淭he RISE participants continue to impress me with their dedication and vision. Their hard work is evident, and the businesses they are launching will offer much-needed products and services that strengthen our community.鈥

Looking ahead, Stoudemire plans to host a grand opening community day for The BLU Resource Center, which will provide school-age children with after-school care, mental health support, life skills education, and financial literacy programming 鈥 along with flexible, hourly drop-in care for busy parents.

Greene, recipient of the Women-Owned Business Grant, plans to open PlayEscape in Fall 2025. The indoor entertainment center will offer a vibrant and adventurous space for families to gather, play, and connect.
